Types of Kitchen Sinks
These sinks have a single compartment where you can only wash the dishes one at a time. Some people prefer a single bowl sink since they take up less space and allow for easier and quicker cleaning, as you have lesser corners, edges and surfaces to swipe over. Moreover, they tend to be cheaper compared to the two or three compartment categories.
A majority of kitchen sinks available today are of the two bowl system. Some come with a 50-50 ratio, while others come with a 60/40. They even come in a variety of configurations such as both with same depth, or one deeper than the other. You can make your choice according to your everyday washing needs. However, these sinks are ideal for doing dishes as they allow flexibility in stacking your dirty dishes, or piling the cleaned ones. For a quicker wash, you can use one to soak the greasy dishes in warm soapy water and use the other one to rinse it clean.
Farmhouse (Apron Front)
The characteristic of a Farmhouse sink is its apron front, or large forward facing section that hangs over the counter. For those who want to give their kitchen a traditional or country side feel, these sinks provide a good addition to compliment the kitchen décor. They are available in both single and double bowl styles, though single bowl ones tend to be more common. One drawback of apron front sinks is that they often require the counter to be designed specifically to accommodate the sink’s installation.
Top Mount sinks, also referred to as ‘drop-in’ sinks are easier and less expensive to install. They typically have an upper rim to hold the sink in place and are designed to be dropped into the gap on your counter top. The top rim gives it a good hold and does away with the need for an internal support system under the counter. Although looks wise they lack the sleekness of a modern sink, they are a good choice for those who like to do the installations themselves. One disadvantage though is that the area between the rim and the counter are prone to accumulation of dirt and scum.
The under mount sink typically has no upper rim and is glued to the under side of the counter. Although this makes the installation process a bit more complex and expensive, they are typically light enough to work with a good glue. However, since it allows the edge of the counter to drop off directly into the sink, it makes the cleaning process easier and the absence of grooves and crevices ensure that food does not accumulate and breed germs. A disadvantage of this type of sink is, in addition to being slightly more expensive, they do not space for faucets and attachments to be installed. As such, you will need to make holes into your counter to install these components.
Problems with Stainless Steel Kitchen Sinks and How to Overcome Them
Stainless Steel is the material of choice for around 90% of kitchen sink owners. This is because of its timeless elegant, yet futuristic shiny look that can blend in with any décor and setting. Moreover, they tend to be durable and easy to clean and disinfect. However, even with the best stainless steel kitchen sink in the world, one is bound to face problems.
The silver lining is that with good maintenance and cleaning practices, it is possible to overcome some of these shortcomings. I will be pointing out here some few of the problems stainless steel sink owners face and how they can surmount or avoid them altogether.
- Stainless steel, as a material, tends to be louder than others, as to all other metals. So the sound of water falling on the sink or running down the gutter can be quite annoying and can sometimes disturb your concentration in the kitchen. To avoid this, you should try to look for sinks that feature spray coatings or padding that can help to reduce noise.
- Even though stainless steel is overall a pretty durable material, it does tend to scratch easily. These scratches then become a safe haven for germs and bacteria to host their daily parties. To avoid this, make it a practice to use soft scouring pads, instead of steel wools.
- Stainless steel sinks are also more prone to water spots. Heavy use of soap and bleach as well as hard water are the main culprits for these. These also tend to make sink wear out faster. To prevent this, make sure you immediately wipe off any residual water or chemicals from the surface of your sink with a dry cloth immediately after every wash.
- Your stainless steel surface may look sparkling and squeaky clean, but that does not guarantee that it is germ free. So it is absolutely essential to use all-purpose disinfectant to kill germs and then wipe clean with a soft towel after rinsing with clean water. You can even try wiping them with rubbing alcohol twice a week to achieve the same results.
With these simple steps, you can easily keep your stainless steel sink as good as new. So you see, buying and maintaining a kitchen sink is not all that challenging. With the right guidance and system, you can make both before
